Senior Computer Specialist | Library Assistant | Research Scientist/Engineer - Assistant

The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, which administers over $15 million in research grants, offers a number of employment opportunities. We also make every effort to maintain a listing of non-CSDE demography related positions.

Senior Computer Specialist

The CSDE runs a state of the art computing center in support of Population and Social Science research with an emphasis on stability, availability, and reliability. Documentation, research, self-teaching, and talking through projects in the planning stages are the keys to success. While customer support is the top priority of this position, there is significant time for infrastructure building and special projects. A major focus of the group in the coming year will be to integrate the UNIX and Windows file server and authentication systems.

Responsibilities

  • Administration and support for Microsoft Windows terminal servers, domain controllers, VPN servers, file servers, and permissions/groups.
  • Administration of the Center’s database-driven web site.
  • Specification and installation of hardware, application software, and licenses.
  • Apply both Windows and UNIX security updates and patches as required.
  • Write shell scripts for automating tasks and monitoring UNIX server systems.
  • Provide coverage of the center’s desktop, walk up, telephone, and email support.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information systems, or related field, and 2-3 years of experience.
  • Self-motivated, ability to demonstrate initiative and work independently, as well as in a collaborative environment with the rest of the staff.
  • Experience administering Microsoft windows Active Directory in a heterogeneous environment using Group Policy Objects.
  • Experience installing and administering UNIX server systems (Debian, Ubuntu, OpenBSD), managing authentication and access controls (NFS, Samba, NIS, LDAP, Kerberos)
  • Experience administering a UNIX-based web and database server (Apache2, MySQL).
  • Familiarity with server virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with TCP/IP networking and firewall technologies.
  • Ability to act as technical lead for support analyst II and windows work study students.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Condition of Employment: Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Library Assistant – Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology

The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology is seeking to hire an iSchool graduate student as a Librarian Assistant (starting at $10.50-12.00 per hr) 8-15 hrs/wk, beginning in August or September 2008. CSDE supports population research and training. The Librarian Assistant serves in the Information Core, which provides information services to affiliated faculty and graduate fellows and maintains the CSDE library with a small collection of demography resource materials and an online catalog. This is a great opportunity to gain experience with information assistance and library management in a friendly, interdisciplinary center on the Quad.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • General reference, bibliographic questions, and citation checking;
  • Comprehensive literature searching and bibliography creation;
  • Locating, retrieving, and delivering library materials;
  • Creating customized current awareness services (e.g., TOCs);
  • Maintain the CSDE Library holdings by overseeing circulation and catalog;
  • Maintaining a list of affiliated faculty recent publications;
  • Supporting and contributing to the Information Core services;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Occasional Duties:

  • Submitting select manuscripts written by CSDE faculty and graduate fellows to PubMed Central;
  • Individual and occasional small group instruction on information literacy topics;
  • Assemble course reserves.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or training in information sciences or related area;
  • Ability to work with patrons in a professional and courteous demeanor;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications;
  • Familiarity with researching in library catalogs, bibliographic databases, and the Internet;
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.

Desirable Additional Qualification

  • Familiarity with, or ability to learn EndNote;
  • Web publishing experience.

Educational Benefits:

Research Scientist/Engineer - Assistant

Notes: This is a 50-100% FTE position for a term one year, with the possibility of extending, contingent upon funding.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks associated with efficient daily operation of a high-throughput biosafety level 2 laboratory. Competitive candidates will have some experience in lab research (either as a student or employee), with a proven record of careful attention to detail and conscientious work habits.

Under direct supervision of the Biodemography core director, the Research Scientist Assistant will:

  • Perform routine enzyme immunoassays
  • Prepare buffers, solutions, and reagents
  • Process biological specimens to prepare them for assay
  • Assist in grant and contract lab work, including calculating lab supplies costs for determining budgets, sending supplies to client labs, performing assays, cleaning and preparing data; sometimes including basic analyses and preparing and sending an invoice for the work, and monitoring whether invoices have been paid
  • Manage ordering and supplies inventories. This includes monitorint inventory of general supplies and reorder as needed, maintaining records of orders placed and received and routinely updating a database of ordering history and expenditures by budget number
  • Housekeeping, including washing glassware and following the cleaning and decontamination schedule specified in the Lab Safety Manual
  • Assist in recording and monitoring assay quality control data for all assays
  • Equipment maintenance, including routinely defrosting large freezers (24 freezers in the lab and archive facility need to be emptied and defrosted regularly), managing regular maintenance for automatic pipettes, including tracking which are due for calibration, decontaminating and packing them for shipment to calibration shop, and performing daily decontamination and maintenance tasks for equipment, including robotic pipettor, autoclave, still, and plate readers
  • Assist in maintaining a large archive of biological specimens (about 125,000), including managing limited fridge and freezer space in both Denny Hall and in the off-site archive facility (houses 20 alarmed freezers), visiting the archive facility weekly to check on the freezers and the alarm system and moving specimens between the lab and the archive
  • Assist in maintaining adherence to UW EHS rules for chemical handling and waste removal for all lab work; maintain Laboratory Safety System database and the Lab Safety Manual
  • Assist in maintaining adherence to UW EHS rules for biosafety level 2 lab operations and biohazardous waste removal
  • Attend annual bloodborne pathogen exposure control training

Requirements:
BA or BS degree, preferably with training in basic biology and/or the social sciences and at least three to six months of experience. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and proficiency in other Microsoft Office software.

Ability to work to high standards both alone and as an integral and active member of a close-knit research team. Commitment to a quality of work that meets CSDE high standards for excellent research and excellent service is critical.

Desired:
Experience in UW procedures for ordering supplies and in adhering to UW EHS rules.

Condition of Employment:
Must be willing to work with potentially infectious biological specimens from humans and non-human primates.
