This newsletter will be used to communicate with you as we plan and organize the training workshop at the Chiang Mai Conference on Partnership Networks and the Spread of HIV and other Infectious Diseases.

Training Workshop Plans

Thanks for all your suggestions and comments.  There seems to be general interest in having some discussion of qualitative data analysis, so we will make an effort to include this.

There was substantial interest in having a session for training fellows to present their work in more detail to get feedback and suggestions.  We have scheduled a session for this on the last day of the conference (Thursday, Feb 10, 3-5pm).  That will give people a chance to think about the material from the training workshop (and perhaps try it out on their own data), and learn from the presentations of the research teams.

Training Workshop Participants

The names, affiliations and short project descriptions of each of the training workshop fellows can be found here. In some cases, I took the liberty of editing the longer descriptions sent to me, so if I have made an error or misrepresented something please let me know.

Reading Suggestions

A number of you requested references to articles that would be helpful to read to prepare for the workshop.  We would suggest the following:

Morris, M (1997) Sexual Networks and HIV. AIDS 11, suppl A:S209-S216.

Lecture notes from Steve Borgatti's course on networks, available at:  http://www.analytictech.com/networks.  Choose the INDEX link, and select the material you would like to see.

Marsden, Peter V. (1990) Network data and measurement. Annual Review of Sociology 16:435-63

There is also a more general syllabus for a networks course available online at http://www.pop.psu.edu/~morris/netsyl99.htm

This mailing should include the email addresses of all training fellows in the header, so you can get in touch with each other if you like.

best,
Martina Morris
